About Us

Eric Miles Cheshire Home (EMCH) is a non-profit organization who provides full time accommodation to up to 40 physically disabled adult residents. We form part of the national Cheshire Home Group of 15 homes across South Africa and welcome residents between the ages of 18 and 59, regardless of race, colour, gender, or creed.

The Home is named after Eric Miles, a philanthropist who dedicated his life to helping those in need. We aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment for our residents, promoting independence and quality of life, all in a homely setting.

EMCH offers 24-hour physical care, including all meals, beverages, and snacks.

Our Vision

Our vision is for an integrated society where persons with disabilities have equal opportunities.

"Working with differently abled individuals is one of the greatest, most humbling experiences I believe one can have. Doing so in a homely setting which some residents have called home for over thirty years really brings you closer to their needs and inspires one to live your best life and to help others do the same."

Resident Stories

Meet Tashinga

Tashinga is one of our younger residents. He is a paraplegic after a motor vehicle accident. He loves to garden and grows the best spinach and tomatoes! Tashinga also works in our Bric-a-Brac shop and is very popular with his shop regulars.

Meet Alta

Alta has Cerebral Palsy and has been a resident for over 30 years. Her family lives close by and they regularly enjoy outings to Canal Walk. She is especially thankful that Century City is so wheelchair friendly because she can pick up quite some speed on that pink chair!

Meet Ray

Ray has Cerebral Palsy and is an institution at EMCH. Being our longest staying resident at 36 years, he has the best stories, knows almost everyone in the community and is up for any adventure. You might even find him online for a game of scrabble!

Meet Buhle

Buhle is our youngest resident, a paraplegic after a motor vehicle accident. She loves to gym and would like to complete her schooling. Buhle works in our Bric-a-Brac shop and has a cheeky sense of humour!
